Coral Reef Club – Barbados

A boutique family-run hotel located on Barbados’s famed West Coast, and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Coral Reef Club embodies the warmth and friendliness of the Caribbean in a thoughtful and discrete hideaway.

From the stunning colonial-style clubhouse to individual coral-coloured cottages and villas, guests feel at home from the moment they step into the twelve acres of landscaped tropical gardens that surround this tucked-away haven of tranquillity.

Famed for its personalised service, old-school luxury and elegant aesthetic, guests are just steps from a white coral sandy beach and uninterrupted sunset views over the Caribbean Sea.

The same understated elegance can be found at the bar and restaurant where local Caribbean tradition marries with the highest modern standards serving dishes that draw heavily on locally sourced fish and seafood as well as tropical fruit. The weekly Thursday barbecue is a must, while lunchtime menus include poke bowls, wraps and salads for lighter meals.

The property’s open-air bar – which stays open as late as guests need it to – delivers standout cocktails within a stylish setting facing the sea and is the perfect spot for sundowners accompanied by a soundtrack of laidback reggae.

Coral Reef Club’s destination spa houses a Thermal Suite with Crystal Steam Room, outdoor Hydro pool, relaxation lounge and multipurpose treatment rooms for manicures, pedicures, massages and more complete with their own private foot ritual patio and garden. Signature treatments include the aromatic Lemongrass and Ginger Rub, with luxury skincare from Natura Bissé in use throughout.

Guests looking to indulge in the relaxing properties of nature will also delight in the extensive gardens, from exotic flora and fragrant frangipani and ylang ylang trees to towering mahogany and flamboyants.

The clubhouse, cottages, spa and beach are linked by winding pathways along which guests frequently encounter hummingbirds, sugar birds and even the occasional monkey. Guests can explore at their leisure or join a weekly tour for expert insight from Coral Reef Club’s horticulturalists.

Coral Reef Club has 88 spacious rooms and suites, reflecting traditional Caribbean interior style with balustrading, fretwork and shutters as well as natural colour palettes, pops of colour from bright florals and well-equipped bathrooms. Choose from garden view or sea view, to enjoy from the terrace, larger suites also have private plunge pools for the ultimate indulgence.

Numerous watersports are available, with many of them included with your stay. Try Hobie Cat or Laser sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, waterskiing and thrilling banana boat and donut inflatable rides.

Keen divers will doubtless head off to explore the various shipwrecks to be found up and down the West Coast, and night dives in the bioluminescent water. The hotel is next door to the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, which welcomes guests to support in their conservation efforts.

Those looking to learn or develop an existing skill can work towards full PADI and NAUI certifications at the on-site dive school or enjoy complimentary daily tennis coaching with the pros and coaches-to-the-stars that regularly take up residence on the hotel’s sleek astroturf courts.

The hotel’s gym is equipped with a host of up-to-the-minute training equipment and free weights while two large swimming pools ensure that there is plenty of room for all in and around the water.

The warmth of the family welcome at Coral Reef Club draws guests back year after year. During the winter, the feel is more couples and there is a designated child-free period between late January and end of February. For the rest of the year, families are welcomed and will often opt to stay in a two-bedroom combination or one of the villas (sleeping 6 or 8).

The Maitre D’ can helpfully organise in-room dining for younger guests between 5.30pm – 9.30pm (as under-5s are only allowed in the restaurant until 7pm) plus a babysitting service, allowing parents to truly relax and enjoy their holiday.
