St Elmo

The Hotel

Family holidays are about sun, sea and air mixed with family jokes and spending time together. St Elmo in the South of Sardinia has all the magic ingredients plus the essentials for a great family holiday – a great beach, fantastic food, plenty of activities and a range of accommodation to suit individual family needs.

A comparatively large resort, St Elmo has 175 rooms, a mix of Classic Rooms, Family Rooms, Family Suites and Junior Suites. Many rooms also interconnect. Most of the rooms and Suites at St Elmo are in the colourful Mediterranean gardens perfect for children to run around.

The beach is about four hundred yards away from the main building and can be reached by a footpath or by complimentary shuttle. There are a range of activities available on the beach. There is also tennis, a small gym and a five a side football pitch. Tennis coaching is available at a charge as are swimming and aerobic lessons. During the season for the four to twelve year olds there is a mini club for when the kids want to get together with other youngsters and there is a teen club for the twelve to eighteen year olds which tends to revolve around sporting activities. Scuba diving is also available close by.

Sant’Elmo offers a variety of dining options as it has four restaurants. The main restaurant, Sant’Elmo serves a buffet style breakfast and dinner. It also has a dedicated menu and a specially designed play area for children. The open-air Gli Oleandri serves traditional Sardinian gastronomy with wonderful char-grilled meats and spit roast cooking. La Rotonda restaurant, features Mediterranean style menus and Hotel Belvedere is in a beautiful setting with stunning sea views. It offers a great à la carte menu. The Pool and Beach Bars are open during lunch hours every day for snacks or light meals.

St Elmo like the majority of hotels in Sardinia is hugely popular with Italians and if you don't love everything Italian you may get a little overwhelmed. Most of the staff speak very good English, but the family cabaret shows if that's your bag are firmly in Italian - although little imagination is needed to understand the content.

Getting to Sardinia and getting around when you’re there:

From the UK British Airways (www.BA.com) fly from Gatwick. Easyjet fly from Luton (www.easyjet.com). Ryanair flies from Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh (www.ryanair.com). Charter flights are also available, but tend to be less flexible in respect of durations and departure dates.

Sardinia is around 170 miles long by about 90 wide, so it is important to get the airport right. For St Elmo you need to fly to Cagliari which is a 40 minute drive away. If you fly to the airports in the North you’ll have a day long drive to get to your hotel. Getting around is very easy and there is an extensive bus network. Taxis are quite expensive, so for complete freedom to see and travel when you want, probably the best option is to hire your own car. Hiring costs from around £20 a day out of season, but in high season you’re strongly advised to pre-book before you travel. Driving around is quite easy with generally good signage. On arrival and departure it’s recommended you leave it up to the experts and pre-book a transfer or alternatively take a taxi (approximately £70 each way).
